The potatoes (3 rows of 3 different kinds) are nearly as tall as I am, and they are all blooming right now, which means potatoes soon. They weren’t ready for midsummer since we were so late planting them. The new snap pea seeds that Anders planted after about half of the first planting didn’t show, are all sprouting out of the ground now. The feathery tops of the carrots are a foot high, and the onions (white and red) have huge long shoots that are starting to bend over under their own weight. We’ve already picked 3 perfect long cucumbers, and a handful of the pickling variety. Now we have to hope that we can find dill crowns this early or otherwise Anders won’t be able to pickle them. There are more coming as well. The cucumbers, all 3, are also nearly as tall as I am and bursting with yellow flowers.

From left: snap peas, carrots, 2x onions, 3x potatoes, and cucumbers at the back.

The cherries on the cherry tree are starting to turn red, and we’ll get at least a couple of bowls I think, if the birds aren’t sneaking through the holes in the net and eating them. And no tomatoes yet, but both plants are also about 3 feet high and obviously thriving in the sunshine we’ve had all week. I planted neon pink pelargoniums in most of the pots last weekend, and the alliums are also about to bloom. Both rosebushes are blooming, huge fat corally pink flowers, and the new one that I bought and potted at the back of the house is nearly as tall as the tomatoes and starting to put out yellow rosebuds. The gorgeous honeysuckle is blooming as well on both sides of the trellis.

But my favorite thing right now is this:

It’s a Lewisia cotyledon, which I can only ever remember the first half of. It’s common names are Siskiyou lewisia and cliff maids. And it’s native to Oregon and southern California. It had flowers when I got it, then they all died off, and left a large round succulent center. And then it started blooming again, and went bananas! As you can see. There are even more flowers coming. I LOVE IT. I read up on Lewisia and found out that Meriwether Lewis (of Lewis and Clark fame) was the first European to officially find one, though Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest were familiar with it, of course, and called it bitterroot. It’s named after him. There are 19 species of Lewisia but mine is the prettiest, don’t you agree?

Mood: relaxed
Music: The Push Stars—Every Angel

Our garden is going gangbusters this time of year, and some things are doing better than we’ve ever had it.
